Sunday Morning musings……….. (Circa March 2013)

After decades of being a believer, I have reached a stage wherein “To believe or not to believe” is not just a question ….. it questions the rationale as to if it is worth the while to live in a ‘make believe’ world.

That there is a higher authority above, which governs life on earth, is a matter of faith for some, and to others it is just make believe. Well since matters of faith are close to the hearts of those who choose it, the same are not the heart of the matter for those who don’t

Well, I am not challenging any authorities above, in whom many have put their faith and trust in, despite not having seen any fruits of redemption for years altogether. However disdainful it might seem, it is now my believe that whichever authority above that breathe life into us at our creation here on earth, the tasks and responsibilities of that authority ceased at that point of time. From then on it became to each his / her own.

Well, for my namesake, I am not ‘Darwing’ from the “Origin of Species”, having not read any pages from that book, but rather from my own rationale. Take for example the animals of the wild or for that matter the street animals that populate our urban and rural areas. From creation, they co-habit, challenge, compete, and copulate, with one another. Some live and die within or beyond their life span; others get killed in accidents or in fights or die due to hunger, disease or other known or unknown causes.

Isn’t the above the same with human beings? The only difference is that we have the capacity to think which gives us the ability to differentiate the right from the wrong, the good from the bad and the beauty from the ugly. With the gift of this thinking ability, why is it that we are unable to use it in our day to day survival issues, but prefer to look to the heavens above to deliver us from every which predicament we face? Isn’t it unfair that the animal kingdom cannot share in the kingdom and glory of those higher powers to pray and deliver them from their miseries? So in a way, our choice to seek the powers from above negates the fairness of the creator to put man and beast on earth and give man dominance over beast but also to seek higher powers as and when required or in need. Or is it that we are weak minded and do not trust our abilities to deal with all the cares and conflicts of life?

Having the capacity to think also gives human beings the moral authority (or the lack of it?) to sit on the throne of judgment and decide what is right or wrong. What is, or who is right or wrong, is a matter of perception or that which conflicts with our own believes of what according to us is right or wrong (not to be misunderstood that which has been laid down by the legal system of each country). What is sauce to the goose has never been the sauce to the gander. It is these believes in their own judgment or authority of what they conceive as right or wrong that put some people on their high horses and preach or proselytize to lesser mortals down below. The view from up there looks very rosy and hence it is very easy to preach sermons from that mount, not having to surmount challenges that foot soldiers face in their day to day existence.

So pray if you must, believe if you must, but desist from preaching or proselytizing if you are unable to dismount from that high horse and do it from ground zero. Life ideally should be a level playing field for one and all. However reality is where we live in and there is where we must base our thinking on day to day issues that confront us. The thoughts of food build up a good appetite, so too these musings are some food for thought

Bon Appetite !!!

You took my breath away

I wanted to stay home today
But mama said I must go to school
I tried to beg her in every way
She said 'don't you be a fool'

The school bus is at the gate
And the driver begins to horn
They'll not wait if I'm late
Sonner than later I must hop on

It was like any normal day
This cold wintry December
Nothing unusual along the way
This was all I could remember

Gun shots rang out in the air
Shattering the peace around
Bloodstained children everywhere
Trying to hide without a sound

I hold my breath and try to run
What's happening, no one could say
I see him, in his hand a big gun
I froze as he took my breath away

- In memory of the 20 children of Sandy Hook Elementary School whose life was snuffed out - circa 14th December 2012

Heartfelt condolences to all those who lost their near and dear ones due to this dastardly act.

My Songs for you

I was born a poor COUNTRY BOY
With a small HOME ON THE RANGE
Walked a many COUNTRY ROADS
Around my GREEN GREEN GRASS OF HOME
It was in the SUMMER OF '69
That I used to LISTEN TO THE RADIO
Got to know that the WINDS OF CHANGE
Were sweeping those on TOP OF THE WORLD
If you found a REASON TO BELIEVE
You too would be BLOWING IN THE WIND.

Oh how I would IMAGINE life
In the glitz and glamor of a FUNKY TOWN
And then I WANT TO BREAK FREE
Put on my BLUE SUEDE SHOES
And DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY
So along with my BROTHERS IN ARMS
I'm LEAVING ON A JET PLANE
And ALL I HAVE TO DO IS DREAM
So SAY WHAT YOU NEED TO SAY
If you wanna be in CHARLIE'S SHOES

Sleeping Beauty

A journey ends, and another begins
My 'train' of thoughts go chugging along
How many losses and how many wins
Will it take to put me on a song

As I gaze out of the window
And play the games in my mind
Is this me or just a shadow
Trying to leave my past behind

Wonderful moments pass me by
And sometimes time stood still
Do I laugh or should I cry
Or do I go against my will

How many journeys will it take
For one like me to realize
It's not in the sleep but in the wake
To see beauty with open eyes

Beautiful indeed even in her sleep
Left me gazing time and again
Peaceful in her slumber so deep
Made me forget all my pain

Many a time I stole a look
Oh what beauty, oh what bliss
With my mobile camera I took
A memory of what I will miss

Jockey retail stores (I am not 'jocke'ying about this)

A couple of days ago, I visited the Jockey retail store at Adyar, Chennai, to pick up a few pairs. Was surprised to see a charming sales girl in the men's section. She welcomed me in which gave a feel good of customer service. Another male bastion invaded by females, I thought !!!

"Can I help you?" she asked with a smile.

(to loosen or drop my pants ????) I was taken aback momentarily !!!

"Thanks, I am fine", I said with a sheepish grin. "I am looking to pick up some jocks", I countered with a naughty smile.

"What' your size"??? She asked

(Uh uh, trying to size me up ???)

Maintaining my composure, I told her my size and my color preferences (thankfully she did not smirk !!!)

Then the faux pas happened !!! Handing me a couple of pairs she asked me "Do you want to try them" ???

"TRY THEM !!!, Do your customers actually try them before buying??? Hell no, then I wouldn't want to buy them" !!! I said. !!!

Realizing the faux pas, she tried to cover up by telling me "No Sir, would you like to see them"

"I already know what they look like", I told her with a wink. "Please pack them, I requested"

Be Positive, Stay Positive ........... no matter what happens

STATUTORY / STRICT WARNING: This article is not to evoke sympathy or raise concerns. I certainly hope that in what ever circumstances you are going through or if things are not going the way you want it to be ....... keep your spirits up, be positive, and most of all keep smiling.

My late father, when alive would always say “In the midst of life, we are in death. I must say that I am happy to be alive and clicking …….. if not kicking after almost rubbing shoulders with death on THREE occasions. I believe, we live in an ANIMALS’ kingdom. They say that a CAT has nine lives, but with my ‘DOG’gedness it remains to be seen how many more deaths can I cheat until my number comes up.

The first encounter must have happened around 1991 on a cold winter’s night when I was in New Delhi those days. After a few drinks with a couple of buddies at well known club in South Delhi, there were three of us and two bikes between us. One was the grand old Royal Enfield Bullet and the other was a TVS Suzuki. I had the option of PIGgy backing on the Bullet, but some other animal instincts made me do so, on the Suzuki. Leo Tolstoy had written “The blood of beast is always in man. I really can’t tell after so many years which animals inherited our blood that night, but by the sequence of events it became evidently clear …… or at least it seemed. For some unknown reason the colleague who was riding the Suzuki suddenly took off as if it he was a STALLION participating in some derby. It just wasn’t HORSE sense at all. Not before long I could hear the “BULLet”et snorting behind in hot pursuit. While overtaking the Suzuki, one of the pedals of Bullet had the faintest of snick on that of the Suzuki. (I bet the cricket snick-o-meter’ of today would not have been able to register this snick. Oblivious to this fact the colleague on the Bullet sped away. That faintest of that snick sent the Suzuki spinning literally (I could see the sparks flying about like a Diwali flower pot!!!) with both of us, the rider – a six plus footer and a diminutive me thrown overboard. The road was so smooth that I was sent skiing on my back trying to use my hands as brakes until I came to stop precariously close to the median. Had my trajectory been headlong towards the median, I might be laughing somewhere else!!!!

The next was around 2001. It was a bad for business worldwide, with the dotcom businesses going bust and then September 11. Somewhere late that year I got struck with some strange ailment which I did not perceive it strange at first. Dismissing it as some form of a viral infection, I was on a self medication. However I started to get a swelling around my ankle with some pains in some joints. Tough, as I believe myself to be, I held on before even contemplating medical consultations. A day later while I was sipping broth at the dining table, I suddenly blacked out and fell to the ground. Thankfully, I did not land on my head, but a part of my shoulder broke the fall. I was not weak at that time, since I was having a normal diet. This is the first time I ever fainted, not due to weakness. When I got admitted to a well known hospital in the vicinity, it took several tests and medical specialists to “try” and deduce what I could possibly be ailing from. But after spending about ten days in hospital and put through many tests that made me feel like a GUINEA PIG, the closest diagnosis was that of streptococci infection or acute rheumatic fever (ARF). But as my medical advisor put it, I was rushed to the hospital just in time, as 24 hours later things could have gone worst. However after many subsequent check-ups and painful dosages of pencillin up the rear, the same medical advisor was to tell me that it may or may not have been a streptococci infection or ARF, but they did not want to take chances. WTF !!!! ….. isn’t it not by chance that we are living ????? We have no choice ;)))). Does not an old proverb say that “Chance make our parents” ???

The most recent encounter happened over the weekend at Bangalore. I happened to be there for a few business meet as well as meet up with a former colleague of more than two and a half decades ago since he too was on a business trip to Bangalore from the US of A. Around 7.45 p.m. on Friday 3rd June, I was trying to locate an address. I was walking along the pavement on Hosur Road very close to the renowned Baldwin Methodist College in Richmond Town. For those who are not familiar with Bangalore, this is one of the very important arterial roads that connects many areas in Bangalore. The pavement was about a foot above road level and the road – to use a term coined by Lallu Prasad some years ago, was as smooth as Hema Malini’s cheeks. – and no streetlights were alight on either sides. Probably the Bengaluru Municipal Corporation contemplated making some savings on electricity since the headlights of the oncoming traffic was dazzling indeed. That it was dazzling is true because most vehicles had their lights on full beam, but sadly the pavement was quite dark. However since the stretch of the pavement that I walked on was good, there was the old ‘ASS’umptions or ‘COCK’iness to assume that “The Road Ahead’ (Bill Gates …. You should read this !!!) would be just fine. Hardly had this thought settled in when my next step took me hurtling down the sidewalks. For just an eerie moment, it felt as if I was being sucked down the black hole of Calcutta !!!. When I landed on terra firma below and there were no slushy-mushy sounds, I was glad that at least my clothes would’nt have been messy. The immediate instinct was to get on to my feet. It was not funny as I looked up, as the pavement was at my chin level and there was not a soul nearby to seek assistance to haul myself up. If Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution came close that evening, the MONKEY instincts in me summoned some unknown strength and acrobatics to haul a 85 kgs frame up on the road without any thing to leverage or support upon. Taking stock of the situation, a stretch of slab a little over 5 feet was removed (and this was quite close to the Main gate of the Baldwin Methodist College.). In short it was almost like an open graveyard about 5+ feet in length, 2 feet in breadth and about 5 feet deep. Now what if ……………

a) The length of the slab removed was lesser than 5 feet ??? – I could have crashed my head on the opposite side during the plunge.
b) If there were rocks or sharp objects in the ditch below ??? – possibly same consequences as the above.
c) If the breadth of the slab was lesser that 2 feet???
d) Had I been knocked cold for hours.?? Only by daylight could some soul spot the one below.

Well pondering on what if all or any of the above happened could have been more CATastrophic. Rather than being RATtled by this, I walked a few steps and since there was no discomfort in the limbs, I was sure that no bones were broken. However there was a burning sensation in my right arm below and above the elbow. Upon inspecting it I was horrified to see bleeding lacerated skin. (see picture attached). Covering the wound with my handkerchief, the first thought was to rush to the nearest chemist or drugstore. Alas, for Bangalore, being India’s premier watering hole, there were more wine shops in the vicinity than chemists. Hoping to ward off any infection, the first reaction was to head to the wine shop and buy a quarter bottle and wash my wounds. For those who think that I am joking, alcohol is amongst the best anti-septics and is good for many an internal or external healing !!!. However the wine shop attendant, upon seeing my injury and suspecting my intentions guided me to the nearest drug store. Self medication with Dettol, Tincture Iodine and Neosporin powder did a lot of damage control unti I found my way to the hotel where my former colleague stayed. There I took a shower and did another round of dressing with assistance this time, and very soon we were back to old times joking about the times we had in the past over drinks and later dinner. When it was time for me to part, I thought I forgot to buy some Brufen tablets which would not only have paracetamol but also control any inflammation or bodily pain. To my good luck my former colleague had loads of them which he bought from the US. However when he packed quite a few for me to take home, I was surprised to see the it resembled exactly like the “blue pill”. I seriously asked him whether he was playing a joke for which he negatived. So I headed back to my hotel and after popping in a couple of the “blue pills” I waited for about ten minutes or so. Since nothing happened, I was glad it was not the blue pill after all inspite of being blue in color !!! It was then I used the webcam of my laptop to snap this picture, hoping that I could use this to file a FIR and sue the Bangalore Municipal Corporation.

The next morning when I awoke, There was no fever or any inflammation. So I guess everything was hunky dory and there was no fear of any infection. Since Saturday 4th June was a packed day, I just couldn’t contemplate the FIR or any action against the BMC. Caught up with a couple of business associates at the Koshy’s. A few drinks and BEEF steaks ensured that I would not only continue to be tough, but also had enough alcohol to ward off any internal infection. After lunch, had to rush to the UB City to catch up with a good friend and family from Chennai who happened to be in Bangalore. And later in the evening was invited by some friends for an event hosted at the Paparazzi in the Royal Orchids Hotel. In spite of some discomfort, the spirits and the skirts lighted up the evening, that I could really shake my legs on the dance floor almost until the midnight hour. All the events after that accident and catching up with old and new friends and the high spirits took my mind off the injury that really help the ugly wound towards a quicker healing process.

So dear friends, the message here is to always be positive, whatever be the situations or circumstances you are in. If you cannot, at least try. Walk with your head held high ….. but not so high as in the clouds !!!

Crow Flu - reality or myth ??

"The 2009 influenza pandemic has spread internationally with unprecedented speed. In past pandemics, influenza viruses have needed more than six months to spread as widely as the new H1N1 virus has spread in less than six weeks," the WHO said. It has become nearly impossible for health authorities and laboratories to keep count of individual cases. More than two million people are believed to have contracted the new flu in the U.S. As of September 13 2009 more than 3,500 have died from the H1N1 virus.

The World Health Organization says the H1N1 swine-flu virus could infect up to two billion people over the next two years - about one of every three people in the world, and if a vaccine is not successfully developed it may kill as many as 700,000.

So much has been said, written and crowed about the bird and swine flu's!!! Hey, did I mention 'crow about'??. I read an innocuous piece of news on the Internet.

"A house crow found dead in Hong Kong has tested positive for the deadly H-5-N-1 bird flu virus. An agriculture official says the crow was found dead in a park in October and tests showed it was carrying the virus."

Hong Kong was the location of the world's first outbreak of bird flu in humans, which hit the city in 1997, leaving some of their people dead.

House Crow (Corvus splendens), also called Common Crow, is a very common breeding resident. This bird is found extensively in all habitats all over India as well as the continents of Asia. Due to a human population explosion in the areas it inhabits, this species has also proportionately multiplied. Being an omnivorous scavenger has enabled it to thrive in such circumstances. It feeds largely on refuse around human habitations, small reptiles and other animals such as insects and other small invertebrates, eggs, nestlings, grain and fruits. Most food is taken from the ground, but also from trees as opportunity arises. It is a highly opportunistic bird and given its omnivorous diet, it can survive on nearly anything that is edible. House Crows roost communally near human habitations and often over busy streets. A study in Singapore found that the preferred roost sites were in well-lit areas with a lot of human activity, close to food sources and in tall trees with dense crowns that were separated from other trees. The roost sites were often enclosed by tall buildings

It is suspected that paramyxoviruses, such as PMV 1 that causes of Newcastle disease may be spread by Corvus splendens (The house crow). Newcastle Disease (NDV) was discovered in Newcastle upon Tyne, England in 1926 (Doyle), but also at this time slightly different strains were found in other parts of the world. Outbreaks in India of Newcastle disease were often preceded by mortality in crows. They have also been found to carry Cryptococcus neoformans, which can cause cryptococcosis in humans. Cryptococcosis, or cryptococcal disease, is a serious and potentially fatal fungal disease. It is caused by members of the Cryptococcus neoformans species complex, comprising the three variants C. neoformans v. gattii (Cryptococcus gattii), C. neoformans v. neoformans, and C. neoformans v. grubii. No treatment for NDV exists, but the use of prophylactic vaccines and sanitary measures reduces the likelihood of outbreaks.

NDV strains can be categorized as velogenic (highly virulent), mesogenic (intermediate virulence) or lentogenic (nonvirulent). Velogenic strains produce severe nervous and respiratory signs, spread rapidly and cause up to 90% mortality. Mesogenic strains cause coughing, affect egg quality and production and result in up to 10% mortality. Lentogenic strains produce mild signs with negligible mortality.

Newcastle disease was one of more than a dozen agents that the United States researched as potential biological weapons before the nation suspended its biological weapons program.

It is my greatest fear, that with the exploding population of the house crow in India, contributed by lack of sanitation or civic sense of its citizens, any new strain of the bird flu, which theoretically can be passed on to crows, will have disastrous epidemic effects. Are we prepared for such a possible contingency in the near future? It is high time, not only the Central or State Governments wake up to such a possible pandemic, but Municipal Corporations, Zila Parishads and Panchayat levels in villages must also pursue its cause and effects.

For a start, studies must be commissioned into the possible outbreaks of “Crow-flu”, and contingency measures to be taken. We must also determine, to what extent and means to drastically bring down the crow population in India. Unless and until some awareness is created to combat a potential disaster, we will all be left as sitting ducks crowing about inane things in life.
